A genre in a soup

Many Tamil films of late have featured a bar song, a ‘soup song’ (which gets its name from the lyrics of the song Why this Kolaveri Di ).This genre of songs has lyrics in which men go on a tirade against women who have dumped them, or blame the women in their lives for their misfortune.

They further ask their fellow male friends to stay away from them. While these songs are relatively toned down in their objectification and imagery of women when compared to item numbers which are blatantly explicit, they have been panned by many for propagating sexist messages.

Reactions online have been mixed across social media platforms for the song. On a few YouTube uploads of the song, the user responses range from people calling the composition out to wondering why the song is being panned for having profanities which are used on a daily basis colloquially. Questions are being raised about the presence of numerous other songs similar to the ‘Beep’ song online. A few are also wondering why only the ‘Beep’ song has been targeted.

“As public figures who are in the limelight, actors like Silambarasan should realise that they have a responsibility and should be more careful about what they are conveying to the society at large,” said V. Pramila from the All India Democratic Women’s Association.

The association had initially filed a case against Anirudh and Simbu in Coimbatore.

She further said that the need of the hour was a change in the collective mindset of the film industry. “It should not only be the activists, but also women and the general public who should take a stance and call out such derogatory content which is being generated,” she added.
