Work on skywalks to begin soon

January 03, 2017 01:03 am | Updated 01:03 am IST - CHENNAI:

Work on the skywalks in T. Nagar and George Town is expected to be taken up shortly. After a long wait, the work on detailed project report for development of the facilities is likely to begin next month. “The study will be completed by consultants in three months,” said an official. The actual area of land required for the project, including land acquisition in T.Nagar and George Town, will be finalised in the study.

Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL) has floated bids for the preparation of the detailed project report. The Greater Chennai Corporation had earlier requested TNUIFSL to appoint a consultant for preparation of detailed project reports and bid documents for the two locations using the feasibility report already prepared.

The skywalk in T.Nagar will connect Mambalam Railway Station and T. Nagar Bus Terminus, while the one in George Town will connect Fort Railway Station and Parrys Corner.

The project was announced in 2013-2014 as part of measures to ease traffic congestion. However, opposition from traders and homeless residents in the commercial area delayed the project. With the eviction of many encroachments in these areas the work can begin.

The consultants will assist the Corporation in obtaining clearance for the concept design from the Heritage Conservation Committee of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority and the Archeological Survey of India.
