June 02, 2010 01:43 am | Updated 01:43 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Puzhal police arrested a woman who poured hot cooking oil on her husband at their house in Puzhal early on Tuesday. The woman took the extreme step after she was repeatedly tortured by her husband, police said.

Harinath (32), working with an optical shop in Anna Nagar, and Devibala were married eight years ago and have two children. The couple often used to quarrel, police sources said.

On Monday night, the couple had a heated argument before going to sleep. Devibala got up around 3.30 a.m., heated cooking oil and poured it on Harinath who was asleep, police sources said.

Harinath suffered severe burns. His cries woke up the neighbours who rushed him to the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital where he is undergoing treatment. The police registered a case of attempt to murder against Devibala and arrested her. She was remanded to custody and sent to Puzhal prison, sources said.
