Vehicular traffic affected for an hour

April 30, 2011 01:58 am | Updated 01:58 am IST - CHENNAI:

Vehicular traffic on Bells Road and adjoining roads was hit for about an hour on Friday evening as there was confusion over the new traffic arrangement introduced by police.

Many motorists said that they were caught in the bottleneck from 5.30 p.m. onwards.

There was little in terms of an alternative, they said, adding that the pile up was long.

The new traffic arrangements, which came into force on Friday, were announced a few days ago by the police as part of the measures to manage the rush of people coming to the Marina during summer.

Traffic police sources said most motorists were not familiar with the new traffic arrangement.

“Under the new regulation, our personnel diverted the vehicles coming towards Bells Road as it was one-way with no entry from Wallajah Road. As a result many of the motorists tried to take a ‘u' turn resulting in a pile up at the junction,” said a traffic police inspector on duty in the area.

Police expect the situation to improve on Saturday as more personnel would be deployed to regulate traffic.
