The Chennai Corporation will start distributing school uniform material to a little over one lakh students studying in its schools from February 15, according to Mayor M. Subramanian. The navy blue and grey stripes uniform has been procured from Co-optex at a cost of Rs.2.19 crore.
A total of 3.67 lakh metres of cotton clothing material has been purchased for implementing the scheme announced in the 2009-10 budget of the Corporation. Students of classes 1 – 12 would receive the materials.
Mr. Subramanian said that on February 17 over 35,000 students studying in classes 1- 5 would receive shoes that the civic body has procured at Rs.27.68 lakh. This was also a budget announcement. The Mayor said that orders have been placed for school bags, which would also be soon distributed to the students.
He said at a function to be organised on Sunday, at the renovated Sir Pitti Thyagarayar Hall in T. Nagar, Deputy Chief Minister M. K. Stalin would present incentives to teachers, whose students did well in the public examinations.
He would give scholarships to students who have passed out of the Corporation schools and are pursuing various courses, including engineering and medicine.
On Friday, the scheme of planting saplings for children born in the city after September 15, 2009, is to be launched.
The tree guards would have the name of the child and the parents, who would be given certificates saying the plants have been named after their children.
The trees would be planted in front of the respective houses or if space is not available in nearby school grounds or other open spaces, Mr. Subramanian said.
