Two persons killed, four injured in group clash

Two persons were shot dead and four sustained injuries in a clash between members of the local Jamath and the Tamil Nadu Tawheed Jamath over offering prayers, in front of the mosque at Thiruvidachery village in Kodavasal taluk on Sunday night.

Haj Mohammed of Thirumangalakudi in Thanjavur district, a supporter of Tamil Nadu Tawheed Jamath, allegedly opened fire from his revolver, causing the deaths and injuries. Police identified the dead as Mohammed Ismail (58), president of the local Jamath, and Haj Mohammed (40) of Thiruvidachery.

The injured persons were Paulraj (55), Ramadoss (40), Sandyago, (25) belonging to Viluthiyur village and Kaja Mohideen (41) of Thiruvidachery.

Police said the clash was over the issue of offering Ramzan Taraweeh night prayers. While local Jamath people offered prayers in the mosque, those belonging to Tawheed Jamath offered them at the house of a woman, Rose Papa, in the village.

P.Moorthy, Superintendent of police, said a quarrel arose between Rose Papa and Jaffarulla, a member of the local Jamath, over the prayers offered separately by the Tawheed Jamath using a microphone. Subsequently, a few more members of the local Jamath entered the scene and reportedly assaulted Quthbudeen of the Tawheed Jamath.

On learning about the harm caused to Quthbudeen, his relative Haj Mohammed of Thirumagalakudi allegedly came with his supporters to Thiruvidachery in three cars in the late night hours to the mosque to make enquiries, when the clash erupted.

Haj Mohammed of Thirumagalakudi allegedly opened eight rounds from his revolver. He was not a member of the Tawheed Jamath, Mr.Moorthy said. .

The injured have been admitted to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. Meanwhile, police arrested 13 persons in this connection and secured two vehicles.

M. Chandrasekaran, District Collector, visited the village. Thirugnanam, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Thanjavur Range; Moorthy, SP, and K.A.Senthilvelan, SP, Thanjavur district; are camping in the village.

Meanwhile, Haj Mohammed surrendered before the Chidambaram police, official sources added.
