Two arrested for running "people's courts"

After running independent and alternative “justice delivery systems” for more than a decade, luck ran out for a two men on Sunday, when they were arrested by Adambakkam police.

Police arrested the two men, who had reportedly been running “people's police stations” and “people's court” and threatening to register cases against individuals and also try them in these police stations and courts.

On Saturday evening Bosco of St. Mark's Church on Mohanapuri in Adambakkam complained to police that Lourdusamy and Sebastian were expelled as members from the church for certain illegal activities and also hurting the sentiments of other members.

The two men had threatened Bosco with dire consequences.

Later, Lourdusamy and an accomplice, Senthamizhkeeraar, had written to Bosco that they were running a “separate government” without receiving salary and a people's court and police stations. They had threatened to publish false news about Bosco in newspapers and television channels if he did not part with Rs. 5 lakh.

Following the complaint, the Adambakkam police arrested Senthamizhkeerar and Lourdusamy on Sunday morning under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code including 384 (extortion) and 505 (intimidation). A search is on for Sebastian.

Lourdusamy had claimed to be the self-styled editor of a publication called ‘ Needhiyai thedi' and also the “Inspector of Velachery People's Police Station” while Senthamizhkeerar has claimed to the ‘All India judge for people's court.' Over the years, the group of men are reported to have extorted several gullible individuals cheating them of money after intimidating them.
