Three persons, including two women, were killed in a road accident at Sabari Nagar junction on Mount-Poonamallee Road in the Chennai suburban police limits on Thursday.
The van driver, who hit them, was allegedly found to be in an inebriated condition. He was arrested on charges of rash and negligent driving and remanded to judicial custody, police sources said.
According to the Inspector (Traffic Investigation) K. Narasimhan, a van loaded with some materials was proceeding from the Chennai airport to Sriperumbudur. Around 6 a.m., the van driver Kasilingam (49) of Tiruvannamalai lost control and drove into a group of women waiting at a bus stop.
While Saraswathi (50) died on the spot, Janaki (45) succumbed to injuries soon after admission in the Government General Hospital in the city. The condition of Uma Maheswari (40) was said to be stable. The women were waiting for a bus to Anakaputtur. The van also hit Gopalan (58) of Mangalapuram who was walking along the road. He was admitted to a private hospital where he died.
A medical certificate confirming that the driver was under the influence of liquor was obtained, Mr. Narasimhan added.
