Suspension period of MLAs reduced

Member suspended for misleading House

April 09, 2010 02:24 am | Updated 02:24 am IST - CHENNAI:

Assembly Speaker R. Avudaiappan on Thursday reduced the quantum of suspension imposed on members of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam from two days to a day. He said they could attend the Assembly from Friday.

The ruling followed an appeal from Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, who said Communist Party of India floor leader V. Sivapunniyam had represented the matter to him.

On Wednesday, the AIADMK members, who were present in the House, were suspended for two days following scenes of pandemonium.

Mr. Sivapunniyam said since 1996, he was observing Mr. Karunanidhi, who was ready to ensure relaxation of House rules to enable members to discharge their duties.

G.K. Mani (Pattali Makkal Katchi) and D. Sudarssanam (Congress) commended Mr. Karunanidhi for his initiative. N. Nanmaran (CPI-Marxist) expressed his party's approval for the move.

Earlier, Mr. Avudaiappan announced the suspension of Gummidipoondi MLA K.S. Vijayakumar (AIADMK) for Monday (April 12) on the issue of wilfully misleading the House on works being undertaken at the Prasanna Venkatesa Perumal temple in Siddhiraj Kandigai village of Tiruvallur district.

He gave an account of the debate on the issue in the last three days.

Despite the Chief Minister's call to the member to correct himself, the MLA was unrepentant, the Speaker noted.
