The sabhas in the city must join hands with dramatists to promote Tamil plays and theatre shows and pass it on to the younger generation, Tamil Nadu Governor K. Rosaiah said on Friday.

Participating in the 125{+t}{+h}year celebrations of Suguna Vilasa Sabha, Anna Salai, he highlighted the contribution made by several famous personalities in promoting art, dance and drama in the city. Popularising Tamil plays and theatre among youth is the need of the hour.

Recalling the contributions of the Suguna Vilasa Sabha, he noted that the sabha, established by Pammal Sambanda Mudaliar in 1891, the father of dramatics, now has over 1,500 members. The sabha had also entertained Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi in September 1926, he said.

He lauded the sabha’s efforts to promote art, dramatics and sports. Mr. Rosaiah also appreciated the state-of-the-art facilities such as gymnasium, sports complex and swimming pool in the sabha. V. Murali, the Sabha’s president, also took part in the function.
