Self-styled soothsayer cons couple

A self-styled soothsayer relieved a woman of her 14-sovereign chain while pretending to be performing a ‘puja' to prolong her husband's life.

According to police, Hyder (24) of B.V. Colony approached Govindan (71) of Varadiah Street in Seven Wells on Sunday and claimed to have predicted his death in a couple of days. He told the septuagenarian's wife, Sivakami (65), that her husband's life could be prolonged if a special ‘puja' was performed. Believing his words, the couple agreed to it.

While pretending to be saying some prayers, he asked the woman to remove her gold chain and kept it on a plate. Sivakami was then told to keep her eyes closed till further instructions. A little later when there was prolonged silence, she opened her eyes and found Hyder and gold chain missing. The Seven Wells police are investigating.
