Running a marathon to help the disabled walk

Thousands of runners participated at the Dream Runners Half Marathon (DRHM) 2016 not just to keep fit but to help those who can’t walk.

The annual marathon organised by Dream Runners held for the fifth year on Sunday saw around 5,000 participants taking part in the twin event — 21.1 kilometres and 10 km. Flagged off by Mylapore MLA R. Natraj, the proceeds of the marathon were distributed to FREEDOM TRUST (Foundation for the Rehabilitation, Education and Empowerment of the Disabled of Madras) to help physically disabled persons provided with mobility aids like prostheses. The motto of the run was ‘Let us run so they can walk’.

A spokesperson of the DRHM, said a total of Rs. 15 lakh have been raised from the last four editions and donated to various social causes. The highlight of this year’s run was 72 foreign participants from 14 different countries.

Another mini-marathon was held by the Income Tax office to create awareness on the Income Declaration Scheme 2016. The marathon flagged of by Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax A.K. Shrivasatava saw a large number of participants. Actor Vivek also took part in the event held at the Marina Beach.
