A revised study on traffic on Anna Salai will be completed by the Highways Department shortly to take a decision on flyovers. Inspecting various projects on Friday, Highways Minister Vellakoil Saminathan said that a decision on Anna Salai flyovers would be taken in a fortnight.

The Highways Department is also weighing in the option of constructing smaller flyovers in the intersections instead of constricting two long elevated stretches of larger flyovers to reduce traffic congestion on the arterial road. The department was planning to complete the piling work of the flyovers before the commencement of the Metro Rail work.

“We are not dropping the plan to decongest Anna Salai. There may be modifications based on the results of the study,”Mr. Saminathan told The Hindu .

The Minister also inspected the Koyambedu Grade Separator. The grade separator would be put to use completely by December.

The work on a three-lane bridge on the Cooum River in Aminjikarai would be completed in two months, he added. The Government Order on commencing work on two flyovers and a subway on Periyar EVR Salai-Nelson Manickam Road-Anna Nagar Third Avenue junctions had been issued.

The initial funding for commencement of the Rs.117-crore project would be done through contingency fund until legislative approval.

The L-shaped subway would begin on Anna Nagar Third Avenue and take a right turn to end at Periyar EVR Salai for vehicles proceeding towards Koyambedu. Vehicles from Koyambedu would also use the subway for reaching Anna Nagar Third Avenue.

Both the flyovers would support traffic only in one direction. Vehicles from Periyar EVR Salai would take an L-shaped flyover and turn right to land on Nelson Manickam Road.

The other flyover would begin on Periyar EVR Salai near Nelson Manickam Road and end on the Anna Nagar Third Avenue. Vehicles proceeding towards the Central railway station from Nelson Manickam Road would take the loop before reaching Periyar EVR Salai.
