May 06, 2010 12:56 am | Updated 12:56 am IST - KANCHEEPURAM:

Ten tonnes of PDS rice were seized and four persons arrested by the police during a vehicle check at Chengalpattu on Tuesday.

Contradictory statements

According to police, a night patrol team near Combined Courts Complex on the outskirts of Chengalpattu signalled a mini-lorry to halt at around 11.30 p.m. The driver, Vijayan of Ambattur, and three others — Raja, Ramajayam and Rajadurai, all residents of Tuticorin — gave contradictory statements when the team questioned them about the consignment and destination of the trip.

200 bags of rice

A check of the vehicle led to the seizure of 200 bags of rice, each weighing around 50 kg, intended for distribution through the public distribution system. Subsequently, all four persons were arrested and remanded to judicial custody on Wednesday.

The rice bags and vehicle were later handed over to the Civil Supplies Department, police said.
