The first round of the Intensive Pulse Polio Immunisation drive for this year that was launched on Sunday in the city covered 4,54,920 children below the age of five.
According to a Chennai Corporation press release, 4,96,140 children are to receive the vaccine.
Mayor M. Subramanian administered the first dose of vaccine on Sunday at the Corporation Welfare Centre in Sivagnanam Street in T. Nagar.
Round-the-clock mobile units were stationed at the Marina Beach, trade fair, circus grounds and the suburban bus terminus.
About 5,000 people, including government officials, members from rotary clubs, Anganwadi employees and Corporation staff were involved in the drive.
On Monday and Tuesday, the Corporation's employees would carry forward the campaign by going door to door to ensure that the children who missed the vaccine are administered it.
The next Intensive Pulse Polio Immunisation drive would be held on February 27.
