Only 19 transgenders voted in Tiruvallur district

Not even 10 per cent of other category voters turned up at the polling booths in 10 Assembly Segments in Tiruvallur district to exercise their franchise on April 13.

A total of 254 transgender persons in Tiruvallur district had enrolled themselves under the ‘others' category in the electoral rolls published by the Election Commission, which had recently accepted their (transgenders') plea in this regard.

However, just 19 of them turned up to cast their votes on the polling day.

While a maximum of 9 transgender persons exercised their franchise in Poonamallee Assembly Segment, where 26 of them have got their names enrolled under others category in the voter list, none of the transgender persons who have registered their names under the same category in the electoral rolls of Gummidipoondi – 12; Tiruttani – 15; Avadi – 29; Maduravoyal – 26 and Ambattur – 30, have cast their votes in the election.

With respect to the remaining Constituencies, 6 out of 13 turned up in Tiruvallur Assembly Segment, 2 out of 28 in Ponneri, 1 out of 36 in Madhavaram and 1 out of 39 in Tiruvottiyur Constituency turned up for voting, according to official sources.

Meanwhile, the District Election Officer and Collector, Tiruvallur, T.P.Rajesh, in a press release, has said that 76.08 percent polling was recorded in the district.

While 83.15 percent polling was recorded in Gummidipoondi, it was followed by Tiruvallur with 81.37; Tiruttani – 80.75; Ponneri – 79.72; Poonamallee – 78.37; Tiruvottiyur – 75.87; Madhavaram – 74.72; Avadi – 71.89; Ambattur – 70.35 and Madhuravoyal – 69.10 percent.

Kancheepuram

In Kancheepuram district, the District average poll percentage shot up on April 14 by almost 16 percent from the provisional figure of 60.50 per cent announced by the District Election Officer and Collector, Ashish Chatterjee on April 13.

The official final poll percentage details released by the District Election Wing on Thursday, revealed that Uthiramerur recorded a whooping 86.32 percent, followed by Tiruporur with 82.73 percent.

Polling percentage recorded in other Constituencies are as follows: Sriperumpudur – 81.82 per cent; Cheyyur – 81.68; Madurantakam – 81.68; Kancheepuram – 80.11; Chengalpattu – 73.91; Pallavaram – 72.15; Alandur – 69.89; Tambaram – 69.82 and Sholinganallur – 67.68 per cent.
