One arm of Vyasarpadi flyover nearing completion

Though work on the project began in 2010, a host of issues had caused delays

Work on one arm of the ₹88.65-crore ‘Y’ shaped Vyasarpadi flyover is nearing completion.

The integration of the portion constructed by the Southern Railway with that of the Highways department has been completed on this arm, which leads up to Erukancheri High Road.

The other arm of the four-lane flyover, connecting Basin Bridge Road to Kalyanapuram, was thrown open for traffic in November 2015.

Sources in the Highways department said that they were in the process of applying wearing coat on their section of the flyover, adding that the other section built by the Southern Railway was also yet to undergo this process.

Simultaneously, work on laying the service lane would also commence. A small issue of land acquisition pertaining to a portion of the service lane is expected to be resolved soon, said an official.

Though work on the 1,720-metre-long facility began in March 2010, land acquisition, transfer of land from government departments, traffic diversion and other issues like the shifting of sewer and water mains had led to delays.

In March 2012, the Southern Railways commenced its work over the railway tracks, at an outlay of ₹8 crore.

Ashok Modi, a resident of MKB Nagar, expressed happiness over the progress made in the project. “It will bring relief to the residents here, who are grappling with heavy traffic. The subway over which the flyover has come up is notorious for large containers and trucks getting stuck inside. It also gets flooded during the rain,” he said.
