Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said here on Sunday that AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa had launched a “mischievous campaign” against his party by “blowing out of proportion,” some issues.

Reacting to charges made by Ms. Jayalalithaa at a demonstration held in Villupuram on Saturday, he said sugarcane production in the State during 2006-2007 was 25.39 lakh metric tonnes. This was the highest output in the last 10 years. In 2007-2008, the production was 21.41 lakh metric tonnes.

Giving a point-by-point rebuttal, Mr. Karunanidhi said that when Ms. Jayalalithaa was the Chief Minister for five years from 2001, she had not offered a single paisa as State Advised Price for sugarcane farmers. During 2003-2004, the payment of Centre’s Statutory Minimum Price (SMP) was delayed by three months.

At the meeting, Ms. Jayalalithaa had stated that when the Centre offered SMP of Rs.795 per tonne, she offered State Advised Price of Rs.214 per tonne that enabled farmers to get Rs.1,014 per tonne of sugarcane. While the Centre had increased the SMP to Rs.503.40 per tonne in the last four years, the present government had reduced the State Advised Price by Rs.80 per tonne, she had said.

Refuting this, Mr. Karunanidhi said the State Advised Price was Rs.219 for 2005-2006, Rs.222.50 (2006-2007), Rs.222.20 (2007-2008), Rs.238.20 (2008-2009) and Rs.359.80 (2009-2010).

He also said that the Centre had announced an SMP of Rs.795 per tonne during 2005-2006 and it was Rs.1,298.40 during 2009-2010. But, the State government had fixed its Advised Price higher than that of the Centre’s SMP since 2005-2006.

This year, the market price for sugarcane had been fixed at Rs.1,437.40 per tonne. Besides, in Tamil Nadu, Rs.90 was being given additionally as cane transportation charges. The order was issued in 2006-2007 for co-operative mills and public sector mills. This was extended to private mills during 2009-2010, Mr. Karunanidhi said.
