Memories of a master composer

T.A.Narasimhan, B. Kolappan and Vipasha Sinha report:

*His number 'Vishwanathan Velai Vendum' in Kathalikka Neramillia, had an interesting incident behind it. M.S.Vishwanathan and his wife had been holidaying in Yercaud for a week, when Kannadaasan, Chithralaya Gopu and Director C.V.Sridhar were waiting for him to begin composing the songs for the movie. The day, he returned from Yercaud and arrived at Chithralaya office, Kannadasan, called out his name and said..''Ennappa..Viswanathaa...Velai kodu..Velai kodukkaama oorukku Poitiye (Viswanathan give me some work).''

Director Sridhar had a spark immediately, and said that should be the beginning of the song and decided to rename Balaiah's character as 'Vishwanathan.' Needless to say, the song was a superhit number.

Vani Jayaram's first song with him was Malligai En Mannan Mayangum. She says, "It was a challenging song and he trusted me with it. It went to become a hit. It was for his music that she received the National Award for the song Yezhu Swarangalukkul from the movie Apoorva Raagangal.

The title ‘Mellisai Mannargal’ was conferred on Vishwanathan-Ramaoorthy at a function, to celebrate the 175-day of Kadhalikka Neramillai, was held at N.K.T. Kala Mandapam, Triplicane. It was attended by Sivaji Ganesan, Chitralaya Gopu, C. V. Sridhar (the director) and poet Kannadasan, who came with the title ‘Mellisai Mannargal’.

Once when lyricist Vairamuthu, who first worked with MSV in the film Thanneer Thanneer, told him that there was a comma in the last line of the lyrics, for the song 'Kannana Poomagane', MSV promptly said the music he composed would also include the comma. “He ensured there was a pause in the place of the comma and one should listen to the song to feel the effect,” Vairamuthu says.
