“It took me some time to create these pencil portraits and I believe you can take some time too,” reads the email invite from V. S Jaya Kumar, an animation designer.

Thirty-six-year-old Jaya Kumar, a resident of Perumbakkam, will be showcasing 25 of his works along with nine other artists at an exhibition in the city titled ‘Sargam 2017’. His works are titled ‘The Revelator’.

His collection include portraits of Mother Teresa, Nelson Mandela and other famous personalities. Portraits of children make up a sizeable number of the collection. Although he sketches on various topics, war-based themes fascinate him the most. He mainly does black and white sketches. Jaya Kumar is thrilled as this is his debut exhibition. “All my sketches are drawn on A2 size sheets for the novelty it provides,” he says, adding that each of the works on display took him anywhere between six and 10 hours to complete. He does these sketches in his free time — he works in an animation design company. Jaya Kumar was inspired by his uncle, who was not a professional artist, to take up drawing. “I started drawing when I was in class VII,” says Jaya Kumar, a graduate from Revivarma College of Fine Art, Kerala. Jaya Kumar plans to teach art to children. Sargam 2017 is on view on January 7 and 8 at Asan School, Thousand Lights. Jaya Kumar can be reached at 87544 03131.
