DMK leader M. Karunanidhi on Saturday said the police should clarify the doubts over the arrest of Ramkumar in connection with the murder of Infosys employee S. Swathi, as the youth’s father had alleged that police had slit his throat.

In a statement here, Mr. Karunanidhi said that of late inconsistency marked the functioning of the Police Department in Tamil Nadu. In the case of Ramkumar, his father had claimed that police had arrested his son to put an end to the search launched for the accused.

The DMK leader said Ramkumar’s advocate had reiterated that his client had nothing to do with Swathi’s murder and had promised to place the evidence in support of his argument in the case.

“There is a doubt that the police had arrested Ramkumar to boast that they were able to secure the culprit quickly. The department has to clear the air,” he said.

Mr. Karunanidhi said a series of murders has rocked the State. “The government has failed to fill the vacancies in the Police Department,” he alleged.

The DMK chief also urged the State government to take steps to prevent the allocation of super-specialty medical courses to the Central pool.

Mr. Karunanidhi also came down on the Centre’s plan to sell Ganga water through post offices, saying if the BJP government is allowed to continue it would even sell holy ash and kumkum at post offices. “It is an insult to the secular credentials enshrined in the constitution,” he said.
