March 13, 2010 02:26 am | Updated November 17, 2021 05:53 am IST - CHENNAI:

Reservation for women in Parliament and legislatures will change the face of Indian politics and give them a share in decision-making, said Jayanthi Natarajan, spokesperson of the All India Congress Committee, here on Friday.

Addressing newspersons, Ms. Natarajan said reservation would make women equal partners in development. Thanking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and AICC president Sonia Gandhi for adopting the Bill in the Rajya Sabha, she said both of them stood firm in their commitment to women and ensured the Bill's passage, for which “we had been struggling for 14 years.”

Ms. Natarajan also thanked the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam for its whole-hearted support to the Congress for the adoption of the Bill. She said the DMK had played a major role as it never went back on its support to the Bill despite opposition from various quarters. She also thanked partners of the UPA.
