Jayalalithaa slams fancy announcements

March 20, 2010 03:05 am | Updated November 17, 2021 05:52 am IST - CHENNAI:

AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Friday said the Tamil Nadu government had presented a budget with growing deficit and fancy announcements, keeping in mind the forthcoming Assembly elections.

In a statement here, Ms. Jayalalithaa said there was nothing wrong in presenting a budget with deficit if it would ensure growth and farsighted schemes.

“But the present budget will lead to a situation where the prices of the essential commodities will go up and the poor will continue to remain poor,” she said.

Recalling the statistics of the government to strengthen her argument that deficit would grow further, she said only Rs.24,432.15 crore revenue had been generated till September 30, 2009. “If the situation is allowed to continue, the deficit will remain,” she said.
