Girl drowns in sump

A five-year-old girl reportedly drowned in a sump at a construction site in Kottivakkam here on Sunday night.

According to police sources, Yendiah alias Rama Rao (30) of Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh, a watchman-cum-mason at a construction site on Vaidehi Street, was speaking with his family members when power supply went off in the area around 7 p.m. Both his daughters Manju (5) and Monisha (3) were playing in the vicinity.

When electricity supply was restored a little later, Manju was missing. Rama Rao and others found the girl drowned in the sump. The victim was taken to a private hospital where she was declared dead. The body was shifted to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem.The Neelankarai police are investigating.
