AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Thursday urged Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to get the President's nod for the resolution adopted by the Tamil Nadu Assembly seeking permission for using Tamil as a court language.
In a statement here, Ms. Jayalalithaa cited the oral direction of the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court that Tamil could be used in the court formally only if the President gave her sanction.
She wondered why the Chief Minister was remaining silent without urging the Centre to get the nod for the resolution which was adopted for year ago.
Ms. Jayalalithaa said it was condemnable that Mr. Karunanidhi was maintaining silence even after the first bench of the High Court granted permission to lawyers to conduct arguments in Tamil.
Recalling Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal's clarification that constitutional limitations would not allow the court to issue circulars allowing use of Tamil during arguments, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the Chief Justice had hinted that it was for the State government and the Centre to issue circulars.
