Gang murders advocate in broad daylight

A gang allegedly murdered an advocate on New Avadi Road here early on Monday. The incident happened in full public view near ICF East Colony when the victim T. Sampath alias Vannian Sampath (41) was going to drop his son Sanjeev Kumar (13) to school.

According to police sources, when Sampath, an advocate practising in Egmore courts, was trying to negotiate a curve, the gang that came on motorcycles knocked him down.

Even before he could react, the suspects armed with deadly weapons hacked him. One of the accused held Sanjeev and closed his eyes.

After Sampath suffered multiple injuries and fell unconscious in a pool of blood, the gang escaped from the scene. Passers-by alerted the police, who reached the spot within a few minutes. Sampath died on the way to the hospital.

A previous enmity is suspected to be the reason for the murder.

“Sampath was involved in a few cases. He was detained under the Goondas Act in 2001. Three suspects surrendered in a Tiruvallur court hours after the murder,” a senior police official said.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) M. Shakeel Akhter said special teams were formed to apprehend the gang.

Ayanavaram police have registered a case.

Meanwhile, Women Lawyers’ Association condemned the murder of Sampath, according to its secretary V. Nalini.
