A gang that allegedly abducted a businessman and demanded money for his release was arrested here on Friday night.

According to police, Hemaram (42) of Nandanam, who owns a chemical sales outlet in Saidpaet area, was returning home after closing his shop on Friday when a gang that came in a car abducted him. Around 11 p.m., his wife, Anusuya, received a call from a man who claimed that her husband was in his custody and demanded Rs.2.4 lakh for his release.

The woman informed the Saidapet police, who formed a special team to investigate. The team followed clues and rescued Hemaram from a chemical storage room in the Ambattur Estate area. Kesavaraja (39), a chemical manufacturer, and his friends Muthu (40) and Genesan (35) involved in the kidnap were arrested.

Kesavaraja told police that Hemaram had taken chemicals on credit and delayed payment of Rs. 2.4 lakh. The kidnap was a plan to collect the dues from him. The accused persons were produced in a city court and remanded to judicial custody, sources said.
