A doctor, who allegedly harassed a student by repeatedly making indecent calls to her, was arrested on Thursday.

According to police, the 22-year-old victim lodged a complaint at the All Women Police Station on Anna Salai that Dr. Karunanidhi (47), working in a popular scan diagnostic centre here, called almost on a daily basis and harassed her.

The woman, who is studying in a city college, suffered minor injuries in a road accident and had gone to the scan centre for a check up a month ago. The accused person managed to take her mobile number from the registration form and called her.

Even as she warned him not to call, Dr. Karunanidhi continued to harass her. A special team arrested the accused. He confessed to having made the calls to the victim. A case under the provisions of the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Harassment of Women Act was registered against him. He was produced in a city court and remanded to judicial custody, the sources added.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the doctor made at least 40 calls each day to the victim. We have asked for the call details from the service provider. The girl is a popular sportsperson and she insisted on firm action against the accused so that it would be a deterrent to others,” a police official said.
