The decomposed body of a man reported missing was found in a canal near Vyasarpadi on Wednesday. The victim was stabbed to death by a gang that stuffed the body in a gunny bag and threw it into the canal.

According to police sources, K. Thamarai Selvi (23) of Vyasarpadi lodged a complaint with the police that her husband Kalaiarasan (26) had been missing since January 28. He was last seen with his friends Kamesh and others.

On the instructions of Joint Commissioner of Police (North) S.N. Seshasai, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Pulianthope) N. Baskaran formed a special team to investigate the case. The team followed specific clues and apprehended Manikandan, Vignesh and Prabha who were planning to escape by train from the Vyasarpadi Jiva railway station.

The trio confessed to having murdered Kalaiarasan over an argument on January 28 along the railway tracks near Korukkupet. They were produced in a city court and remanded to judicial custody. While three other accused in the murder — Kamesh, Satish and Prabha — were arrested by the Chennai Suburban Police in connection with chain snatching cases and lodged in the Puzhal Central Prison, two others are said to be absconding.

The body was shifted to the Stanley Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem, the sources added.
