Cycle showroom sealed

January 20, 2011 01:23 am | Updated 05:11 pm IST - CHENNAI:

A building housing a bicycle showroom on Chennai Tiruvallur High Road in Ambattur was sealed on Wednesday for violations.

Officials of Ambattur Municipality said the building was being used as a showroom by TI Cycles of India. Plan approval was not sought from the local body and hence notices were served last year to stop using the space as a showroom, the officials said.

Following this, the company kept the building locked for months. It was reopened recently and the local body issued notice for locking and sealing the building, an official said.

According to the official, the local body has issued notices to stop work in six commercial buildings in Ambattur and neighbouring areas. Officials of town planning wing of the municipality are in the process of identifying commercial buildings that have either deviated or violated norms.

Last month, a team of officials of the municipality sealed a building that was used for commercial purpose on Yadaval Street, Padi. Once the building gets sealed, the owners have to seek planning approval only from the Housing and Urban Development Secretary, the official added.
