Man absconds with jewellery

A 25-year-old man working with a goldsmith in Elephant Gate allegedly fled with 200 grams of gold jewellery.

Police sources said Dinesh, a native of Kolkata was employed at the shop of goldsmith Susheel Das (50) on Walltax Road. A few days ago Das gave Dinesh the 200 grams of old gold to be melted and made into jewellery. Dinesh, who was residing nearby had gone home with the gold and didn't return. On Wednesday, Das went to Dinesh's room to find out that the latter was missing along with the jewellery, police added.

Susheel Das lodged a complaint with the Elephant Gate police who are investigating.

Youth found dead

A youngster who had gone to a college to collect application forms on Tuesday was found dead in a pit dug up for a subway, which was filled with rainwater, in Velachery on Wednesday.

Police identified the youth as Murugan (18) of Kapalithottam in Mylapore. He passed out of school recently and had gone to a college in Velachery to get admission forms.

Around 8 p.m. on Wednesday, passers-by spotted Murugan's body in the pit near the Velachery MRTS railway station. Police suspect that he might have got in to the pit to swim and drowned.

Fatal fall from terrace

A 47-year-old man who allegedly fell from the terrace of his house in an inebriated state on Wednesday died later in a hospital.

Seven Wells police said the incident occurred around 9.45 p.m. on Wednesday after Kumar alias Aavin Kumar of Kumarappa Mudali Street, Seven Wells, went to sleep on the terrace in an inebriated state.

He fell on the ground and was rushed to the Government Stanley Hospital by family members. He succumbed to his injuries around 11.30 p.m.

Kumar was an employee of Aavin and was suspended recently, police said.

Minor fire in apartment complex

A minor fire broke out inside an apartment complex in Teynampet on Thursday. No one was injured in the incident.

Sources in the Fire and Rescue Services said that the incident was reported at 11.51 a.m. after smoke billowed from the third floor of Alsa Moser complex on Ganapathy Colony 3rd Lane.

Four fire tenders from the Teynampet, Saidapet, Egmore and Guindy fire stations were rushed to the spot and the fire was put out within an hour. Furniture sets, computers, electronic items, a split air-conditioner and other household items were charred, sources added.

The cause of the fire is suspected to be an electrical short circuit.

Chain stolen

A 50-year-old woman allegedly lost her gold chain in an MTC bus in Adyar on Wednesday.

Police sources said that the incident occurred on Wednesday evening when Devanesam of Thiruvalluvar Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, was on the bus from Mylapore to Adyar. She realised that her gold chain, weighing 7.5 sovereigns, was missing on reaching the Adyar depot. The victim's husband is a Sub Inspector attached to the Sasthri Nagar police station, sources said.

Run over by lorry

A septuagenarian was fatally knocked down by a tanker lorry in Ayanavaram on Thursday.

Sources with the Anna Nagar traffic investigations said Sivasankaran (74) was a retired railway employee and resident of Pattachariyar Street in Ayanavaram. The accident occurred around 11 a.m. on K.H Road when the victim was walking to the ICF area to collect his pension amount.

The tanker lorry driven by Munusamy (55) of Cheyyar hit Sivasankaran from behind, killing him on the spot, sources added.

Munusamy was arrested.

Man found dead

A 60-year-old man was found dead at his flat in an apartment complex on Radha Nagar Main Road, Chromepet on Thursday evening. The Chitlapakkam police said that Dhandapani, was staying alone in the flat since his wife died about a year ago. Neighbours informed police after a foul smell started emanating from the house. The policemen said cut injuries were noticed on the body and it was not clear if it was a murder for gain.

Police suspect the murder to have been committed on Thursday, adding loss of property, if any, was still being probed.
