The Chennai Corporation Council on Friday passed a resolution approving issue of no-objection certificate to the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) for installing 380-odd bus shelters in the city.

Last month, MTC had submitted its design for the bus shelters to the civic body and sought permission and NOC. A model shelter has been installed on Durgabai Deshmukh Road near Malar Hospital.

Last year, MTC had established bus shelters that did not conform to international standards and the design approved by the civic body. As a result, the Corporation wrote to the MTC in September 2009 asking it to stop installation of such shelters.

Following the Council's approval on Friday, the MTC would be able to set up bus shelters whose design differs marginally from that mooted by the Corporation.

The NOC stipulates that advertisement space on the shelters on roads under the control of the Chennai Corporation must not exceed 180 sq.m. It should not be more than 205 sq.m. on roads under the control of the Highways Department.

Another condition is that the shelters should in no way pose hindrance to pedestrians and must be installed in consultation with the respective zonal officers.

The MTC has been asked to take steps to vacate the writ petition filed by the consortium of advertisers against the Corporation.

The civic body will also take steps to replace hundreds of old concrete shelters under its control.

A senior official said that if MTC did not conform to the NOC stipulations, the civic body had the power to remove the shelters.
