Schools run by the Chennai Corporation will begin their admission process for the next academic year on April 1, according to Mayor M. Subramanian.
Speaking at a function organised by the civic body to distribute free school bags to the students on Wednesday, he said that the application forms were being readied and a door-to-door campaign would also be taken up soon to make people aware of the various initiatives introduced in Chennai Corporation schools.
The Mayor said that two awareness workshops would be held in north and south Chennai with eminent personalities and film stars participating in them and talking about school education-related projects of the civic body.
At Wednesday's function, students of the Corporation High School, Vyasarpadi, received school bags from the Mayor. “In all, 1,05,532 students in classes I to XII, going to Corporation schools, will receive new school bags. Three varieties of the school bags were procured and each of them is of a different cost,” he said. The total cost that the Corporation has incurred on this initiative is over Rs.1 crore.
“Though we had made this announcement earlier, we had to invite tenders two, three times, until the quality of the bags was satisfactory. We even had the samples sent to the Central Leather Research Institute to check if the quality was good enough,” Mr. Subramanian said.
Outlining the various initiatives taken by the Corporation in the interest of students, including free uniforms, shoes and dictionaries and scholarships for meritorious students, he said that it was important to make them known to many, so that the enrolment of students to Corporation schools, particularly at primary level, goes up.
Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said while students were already doing remarkably in examinations, they must aim for cent per cent results.
“These days, if you admit children to Corporation schools, everything else about their education is well taken care of. That is the quality of education and facilities provided.”
