: The Women Lawyers Association (WLA) of the Madras High Court has filed a criminal defamation complaint against animal rights activist Radha Rajan, for her alleged statement degrading the “peaceful” protests seeking conduct of jallikattu.

According to the complaint filed in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Allikulam, Chennai, Ms. Radha Rajan had made a “vulgar speech” in public media on January 20, degrading the pro-jallikattu protests. “The speech showed scant regard for women, was derogatory, abusive, and scandalised the dignity of women, particularly women of Tamil Nadu. She has no locus standi to talk in such a manner against the chastity and dignity of women,” the complaint said.

Noting that it is the constitutional right of Tamils to protest for jallikattu in a peaceful manner, the petitioner wanted the court to take cognizance of the act and initiate criminal defamation proceedings against Ms. Radha Rajan.
