Oculoplasty has been one of the most popular and oldest branches in ophthalmology but India has a long way to go in creating awareness among people about the treatments available here, according to oculoplasty surgeons.

Speaking at the inauguration of Sankara Nethralaya's Oculoplasty Reconstructive and Aesthetic Clinic here on Monday, they said that there was a lot of myth about cosmetic surgeries, especially those related to the eye.

For instance, Botulinum toxin is still not considered as a surgical option among the public because of the misconceptions about the procedure. Apart from reducing wrinkles, it can also treat migraine, said Bipasha Mukherjee, Director, Department of Orbit, Oculoplasty and Trauma Services of Sankara Nethralaya.

With technological growth, cosmetic procedures have become minimally invasive and less time-consuming, said Nirmala Subramanian, professor of Oculoplasty, Sankara Nethralaya.

“Reconstructive surgeries are usually done on the eye lids, which can enhance the looks and expression. Correcting asymmetrical eye lids and cleft eye lids in newborns are also part of the oculoplastic treatments,” she said.

The clinic would diagnose and treat abnormalities of the structures around eye, facial paralysis, nasolabial folds or laugh lines and deep facial lines between brows, said Shubra Goel, associate consultant, Oculoplasty of the hospital.

“We have been getting a lot of cases to treat oculofacial blemishes and moles. These are treated through chemical peels and dermal abrasions, with specific care to protect and in some cases, enhance the eye sight,” Dr.Goel added.

The clinic, set up at Navasuja Sankara Nethralaya in R. A. Puram, would also provide treatments for bags under the eye, overhanging lid skin, drooping eye lids, lines of ageing, skin pigmentation and deep sunk eyes.

Surgeries such as brow lift, ptosis to correct the position of eye lids, fat transfer and small incision face lift will also be offered at the hospital. Actor Karthi Sivakumar inaugurated the Oculoplasty clinic.
