After complaining about the soaring heat for a few days, residents in some pockets of the city were treated to a brief spell of rain on Thursday.

Many localities, including parts of Anna Nagar, T. Nagar, ICF, Villivakkam, Ashok Nagar and Padi junction experienced sharp showers for a time span ranging from 5 minutes to 20 minutes. A light drizzle was experienced in some areas, including Velachery.

Meteorological Department sources attributed the rainfall to the development of thunder clouds and predicted that there could be showers or thunder showers on Friday. The brief spell of showers was enough to bring down the temperature by nearly three degree Celsius, as compared to Wednesday, and make the weather pleasant. The maximum temperature in Nungambakkam on Thursday was 33.7 degrees Celsius and in Meenambakkam it was 34.1 Celsius.

Residents in the southern suburbs of Chennai were also taken by surprise following sudden, unexpected showers on Thursday morning. What began as a slight drizzle intensified into sharp showers for just a few minutes around 10.30 a.m. Two wheeler riders scampered for cover. Those travelling on road over bridges were completely drenched. The showers were enough to cause water logging in many streets.
