Additional security will be provided to Opposition leader Jayalalithaa in the light of threat letters received by her, said Letika Saran, Director-General of Police (DGP).
On the sidelines of ‘Leadership development programme for women,' organised by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) here on Monday, Ms. Saran said clear instructions had been given to police personnel to provide her with Z + category security.
Anonymous letters
The AIADMK had demanded the highest security possible to party general secretary Jayalalithaa in the wake of anonymous letters warning her not to visit Madurai. The letters were received at the Jaya TV office in the city.
AIADMK treasurer O. Panneerselvam and headquarters secretary K.A. Sengottaiyan on Monday submitted a memorandum to Home Secretary K. Gnanadesikan, seeking an inquiry into the episode.
“The government should take steps to find out those behind these anonymous letters and take action against them,” they said in the petition.
They wanted security for the party advocate Pasumpon Pandian and his family members, who also received death threats.
“No action taken”
The AIADMK leaders said though they filed a complaint with the police on August 29, immediately after the first letter was received, no action was taken. Subsequently, another letter was received.
They alleged that it was unfortunate that no action had been taken after a leader, who was under Z grade security, had received death threats.
The AIADMK leaders also demanded adequate security for the Jaya TV office.
