A two-month-old abandoned baby girl was handed over to the police by a roadside vendor on GST Road in Tambaram.

According to police, a 20-year-old woman had approached the vendor, Anandhi, with the child. The woman said she would collect the baby after sometime.

But when the woman did not return after an hour, Anandhi handed over the baby to the Tambaram police, who, in turn, placed the baby in the care of a local non-governmental organisation.

Police sources said that last year they had found a newborn baby in a bag and was given treatment and sent to the home.

“In such cases, we normally inform neighbouring police stations so that parents who have reported cases of missing children could come and claim their wards. Till that time, either government homes or such NGOs help us,” a police source said.
