ATM maintenance officer held for stealing 42 lakh

CHENNAI: The Avadi Tank Police have arrested Dilli Babu for stealing huge amounts of cash from Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) in and around Avadi on Sunday.

A senior officer said a case was filed by a company involved in filling cash in ATMs recently that Rs. 42 lakh was missing from various ATMs. Based on the complaint, a special team of personnel with experience in handling bank fraud cases was formed.

On investigation it was found the cash was missing not because of any break-in or by skimming but it was the work of an ‘insider’. The special team found Dilli Kumar (34), a resident of Avadi, to be the man behind the fraud.

The police officer said the accused was working as a maintenance officer of the company involved in filling cash in ATMs. As he knew the codes for opening the cash machines, he had removed Rs. 42 lakh in cash in the guise of ‘servicing’ the ATMs in the past three months. The accused was arrested and remanded in judicial custody.

Now, police are investigating if the accused was behind the theft of Rs. 25 lakh in ATMs in Thiruvallur district also.
