A total of 87 locations reported waterlogging in various parts of the city on Thursday following sharp overnight showers.

Residents reported civic issues caused by waterlogging to corporation helpline 1913 from various zones. B. Murali, a resident of Otteri, said the rising water level in Otteri Nullah has caused waterlogging in many roads.

Plea to clear blocks

“Water level increased in many residential areas. The officials should clear all blocks for free flow of water before heavy rains,” he said.

Egmore MLA K.S. Ravichandran said residents of several roads such as Alagappa Road in Purasavalkam and Flowers Road in Ward 104 in his constituency reported waterlogging.

Residents in areas near Anna Arch, Shenoy Road in Nungambakkam, Konnur High Road and Pillaiayar Koil Street in Tondiarpet also reported waterlogging to civic officials.

Chennai Corporation officials claimed that most of the 87 locations reported just half a feet of water and that the number of waterlogged areas had reduced this year. Residents in Virugambakkam, Ambattur and Velachery said the waterlogging has reduced in many roads after implementation of integrated stormwater drain projects.

The Corporation issued work order to develop missing links of stormwater drains in 335 locations across the city ahead of the northeast monsoon.

“We have completed work in four missing links of stormwater drains. Work on 193 locations will be completed by December,” said an official.

While work on many locations has not started, in many places work has been suspended because of restrictions by the traffic police, said a civic official.

Missing links of SWD

Former Chennai Corporation Council Floor Leader V. Sukumar Babu said the officials should complete missing links of stormwater drains in congested areas before heavy rains.

“The Corporation has not desilted Kulakkarai Salai, Perumal Koil Garden Street, Rajiv Gandhi Street and Razak Garden. The water flow was slow today. If the rain is heavy, the waterlogging would be much more,” said Mr. Babu.
