An octogenarian was murdered on Sunday night when he attempted to apprehend the culprits who robbed his wife at Kolathur.

According to the police, a group of thieves entered the house of Baluchettiyar (81) on Sunday night when he was away. The culprits sprayed chilli powder on the face of Baluchettiyar's wife, Amsaveni (75) and snatched a gold chain and other ornaments weighing around 13.50 sovereigns.

When the thieves were about to leave, Baluchettiyar entered the house and encountered the robbers. They pushed him down and fled.

Unfazed, Baluchettiyar got up and went after them. The culprits attacked him with an iron rod on his head.

They dumped his body in a roadside water tank and fled the scene.
