A Railway Protection Force team on Friday seized 75 stolen mobile phones valued at Rs. 5 lakh from a five-member gang that targeted railway passengers in trains and busy terminals.
The members of the gang – aged between 23 and 27 and hailing from Sahibganj district in Jharkhand – were apprehended from Platform No. 8 at Chennai Central when they raised suspicion during a specially mounted vigil directed by S. R. Gandhi, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner, RPF, Chennai.
On interrogation, the gang members confessed that the 24 mobile phones recovered from them were stolen from passengers at Chennai Central, Moore Market suburban station and its precincts. They also admitted to having stolen mobile phones from passengers at the Park Town station and the EMU trains on the Beach-Tambaram section and kept the goods at a nearby lodge, said RPF Inspector M. Thiruselvam.
Based on their confession, RPF and GRP teams raided a lodge on Walltax Road and recovered 51 mobile phones.
