This takes the total number to 192; institute to seek polling booth on campus

Sixty three more patients of the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) have been added to the voters’ list. This takes the total number of patients registered in the electoral list to 192 — 114 men and 78 women.

P. Poorna Chandrika, director of IMH, said they are now planning to seek a polling booth on the IMH campus.

“There are issues with logistics. It will be difficult to take patients outside the campus and make them wait in a queue at a polling booth. So, we are hoping that we would get a booth on our premises,” she said.

900 patients assessed

Doctors of IMH had taken up an assessment of the 900-odd patients to enrol them in the voter’s list. Persons, who had improved following treatment, were registered.

In the first round held on February 19, 129 patients (62 men and 67 women) were enrolled in the list and are waiting for the Electors Photo Identity Cards.

In the second round, 52 men and 11 women patients were enrolled. “This will be the final number of patients enrolled in the voters list for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections,” she said, adding: “We will now focus on creating awareness among them. The officials of Chennai Corporation have told us that they would demonstrate the Electronic Voting Machines for the patients, while the Disability Rights Alliance will create awareness on voting. Newspapers are circulated among the patients, and they also have access to news in television.”
