Over 6,000 runners are to participate in The Wipro Chennai Marathon (TWCM) 2012 scheduled to be held on December 2. Four events will be held on that day –the full marathon (42.2 kms), half marathon (21.1 kms), 10 km-marathon and a special children’s run.

The TWCM will see over Rs. 1.6 lakh given away in cash prize across two categories. While the first three winners of the full marathon will get Rs. 25,000, Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 10,000 respectively, the half-marathon winners will get Rs. 20,000, Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 10,000. The winners will also be given an opportunity to participate in the ‘The Wipro San Francisco Marathon’ to be held on June 16, 2012 at San Francisco.

Ram Viswanathan of Chennai Runners said, “It is the first time we have organised a full marathon. This time, we may have ‘chip timing’ help to keep track of the time clocked by runners in view of the huge participation anticipated.”

The full and half marathons will start from IIT-Madras. While the half marathon will end at INS Adyar, the full marathon will see the participants returning to IIT-M, covering 42 kilometres.

As a lead up to the event, there will be an expo at Express Avenue on December 1, 2012 where the participants will collect their bibs and timing chips for the run.

The marathon route will have aid stations, hydration points, medical facilities and ambulance services.
