The Chennai Corporation will soon admit 14 mentally ill persons found wandering on the roads to the Institute of Mental Health, Kilpauk, according to Mayor M. Subramanian. Speaking to reporters after visiting 42 persons who have been admitted to the Communicable Diseases Hospital at Tondiarpet on Wednesday, he said six of those persons would be sent for rehabilitation and 22 to homes for senior citizens.
In the past few weeks, a total of 152 persons were picked up by the civic body of which 99 were admitted to the IMH, 16 were reunited with their families and 13 were sent to homes for senior citizens. The drive to pick up mentally ill persons will continue, he added. Deputy Mayor R.Sathyabhama and Chennai Corporation Deputy Commissioner (Health) P.Jyothi Nirmala also interacted with the patients.
