A 13-year-old boy drowned while attempting to stay afloat on a thermocol block while swimming with friends in an unused agriculture well in Sembakkam. Fire Services personnel fished out the body after an hour-long effort.

According to Selaiyur police, the accident took place around 8 a.m. on Saturday when the victim Abilesh Nagaraj, a class V student of a government school in Selaiyur and a resident of Rajiv Gandhi Street, Gandhi Nagar in Rajakilpakkam, had gone swimming with his two friends.

“The boys entered a 40-ft-deep unused well filled with water and tried to swim using thermocol pieces. Abilesh, who was floating on one, lost balance and fell into the water. His friends ran out and called for help but the locals who came to the well couldn’t jump in due to its depth,” said an investigating officer.

The Fire department was alerted and firemen reached the spot and recovered the body and sent it post-mortem to the Government Chromepet hospital.

Selaiyur police has registered a case of unnatural death and are probing further.
