10-year-old boy dies

A 10-year-old boy died in a road accident in Besant Nagar after being knocked down by a van attached to his school in Besant Nagar.

Adyar traffic police sources said the accident took place around 9 a.m. on Monday when the victim B. Sudakar, a class V student of St. John’s School in Besant Nagar and a resident of Ganapathy Street, Royapettah, was headed to school on his father Balakrishnan’s scooter. While Sudakar was riding pillion on the vehicle, his sister Astashri (5) was standing in front of Balakrishnan.

When father and children reached Besant Road, a van belonging to Sudakar’s School, rammed into Balakrishnan’s scooter. He and the two children were thrown on the road. Sudakar sustained severe head injuries while Balakrishnan and Astashri escaped with bruises.

Balakrishnan along with other motorists rushed Sudakar to a private hospital nearby were he succumbed to his injuries around 4 p.m.

Adyar traffic investigation registered a case and arrested the driver of the van, Bhaskaran (39) of Kancheepuram, sources said.
