10-hour power cut in Velachery

Hundreds of Velachery residents were left without power for more than 10 hours on Tuesday after a fire at a substation. The technical snag in the breaker system caused the power failure early morning, and it was rectified in the afternoon, after which supply was restored.

This is the third instance where a snag in the breaker system at the substation has caused power failure. An earlier fire on December 16 last year had resulted in a power disruption for more than 12 hours.

The power failure caused severe hardships to residents in Sarathy Nagar, Vijaya Nagar, Bala Murugan Nagar, VGP Selva Nagar, Devi Karumariamman Nagar and Kathiravan Nagar.

S. Ranganathan, a resident of VGP Selva Nagar, said the early morning power disruption in their locality delayed several household chores.

A senior Tangedco official said a fire was detected in the breaker system at the Velachery substation and power supply was immediately shutdown, causing power disruptions in particular areas fed by the breaker system.

No alternative

Alternative power supply to affected areas could not be arranged, as there was no back-feeding facility other than the Taramani substation, the official said.

At present, the Velachery substation is overloaded with capacity and in case of a technical snag, authorities are unable to provide alternative supply.
