1 killed, 1 injured as crane crashes in Chennai airport expansion work

One person was killed and another seriously injured when a crane suddenly crashed and fell on them during airport expansion work near the domestic terminal here on Wednesday, police said.

Police said Selvamani (45), hailing from Ennore of north Chennai, died en route to the hospital. The other person has been hospitalised.

Airport officials said they are probing the cause of the mishap.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed for some time near the airport area when over 100 taxi drivers blocked vehicular traffic, protesting against demolition of a small temple near the highway leading to airport by Highways Department officials.

Police immediately intervened and took them into custody.

Road traffic was disturbed for an hour in the area, police said.
