Not all hopes are lost. Chennai pavements can be recovered. But that requires care, commitment and good design.

Here are some demonstrations. The illustrations accompanying the photographs show that inadequate, unattractive and less endowed streets could be transformed through will and design.

The Chennai Corporation has chosen 71 bus route roads for redesigning. It had collaborated with City Connect Foundation and The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy for this. A number of architectural firms in Chennai have also voluntarily joined this project and proposed street designs that match with the best standards across the world.

The designers join The Hindu campaign to display a few designs and emphasise that the Corporation can successfully design and maintain Chennai pavements. The Corporation commissioner, in his recent interview to The Hindu, had promised to implement these 71 street designs within a year. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
